Even streaming services like Netflix and Hulu jumped on the bandwagon, creating a new avenue for rom-com movies and series, bringing the genre to a broader audience, including teenagers.
But what are cozy stories, exactly? And why have they found such a large audience in today’s fast-paced, sometimes overwhelming world?

At its core, cozy romance or mystery is characterized by its gentle, reassuring tone. It focuses on creating a sense of comfort and safety, often through small, familiar settings, and relatable characters.
These stories rarely contain the high-stakes drama or tension of the thriller or horror genres. Instead, cozy stories are about escapism, finding relief, even if for a short time.
A defining feature of cozy stories is their “coziness” factor, which is the quality of being comfortable, warm, and friendly. Think about the settings in this genre; they’re in small towns, quaint villages, the countryside, a fishing village, or other peaceful areas.
The conflicts include saving a cupcake shop, a library, an apple orchard, or a pumpkin farm. A common thread in cozy stories is their picturesque and serene nature.
Even the narrative style is usually low on conflict and high on warmth, often involving elements such as baking, crafting, gardening, exploring local history, or light mysteries.
Characters in these stories are typically kind-hearted, and the conflicts they encounter are usually resolved without confrontation, creating a sense of easy-to-get-to emotional fulfillment for the reader.
This is not to say that cozy literature doesn’t address challenges or hardships. But it does so in a more wholesome approach, often through community support, personal growth, or the comfort of rituals and routines.
“Sleepless in Seattle” is a good example of how challenges and hardships can be incorporated into a cozy romance. There is the loss of a wife and mother and the breaking up of an engaged couple, yet it still evokes a fun and warm experience and has an out-of-the-park satisfying ending.
The cozy genre is about escaping into a world where problems are solvable and where the reader can breathe easily.

There’s a growing craving for simpler times, and the cozy genre taps into this feeling.
The settings of many cozy novels—whether it’s a countryside inn, a small bookstore, or a coffee shop—call to mind an idealized version of the past, a world where life moved at a slower pace and relationships were built on small, intimate connections.

There’s a kind of security in knowing that everything will work out in the end; it’s quite the contrast to the often unresolved, cliff-hanging nature of modern news or the unpredictability of life itself.
This predictability, where everything will fall into place, provides a sense of control and stability for readers.
